Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2026 – Live Review Leipzig | EBM, Darkwave & Gothic Festival

Every year at Whitsun, something extraordinary happens in Leipzig. Tens of thousands of people dressed in black descend upon the city, transforming it into the beating heart of global dark culture. The streets fill with Victorian corsets, cyber goths, death rockers, medieval knights and EBM warriors — and for five days, the world makes sense in a way it rarely does anywhere else. This is the Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2026 , and the 33rd edition delivered once again.

We made the drive from Belgium to Leipzig — not without incident, as a cooling system problem kept us on our toes — but nothing was going to stop us from being there. Here is our day-by-day account of WGT 2026, photographed and experienced firsthand.

📅 Thursday 21 May 2026 — EBM Warm-Up Night Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2026

The WGT EBM warm-up is traditionally the best way to shake off the road dust and land headfirst into the Leipzig vibe. Starting at 20:00, the night served up a tight selection of electronic body music acts that set the tone for the entire weekend.

Plastikstrom

A very solid set to kick things off. Plastikstrom delivered exactly what their name promises — sharp, rhythmic electronics with a polished stage presence. A quality act that warmed up the crowd efficiently and left a good first impression.

Damage Code

Old acquaintances from the Hammershoi scene, and they showed exactly why they are still relevant. Tight rhythms, no nonsense, straight-ahead EBM with that precise mechanical feel that the genre demands.

Oberst Panizza

An intriguing crossroads between Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk — that is the only way to describe this act. Melodic, synthetic, forward-moving. A pleasant surprise on the night.

The Juggernauts

Our Belgians. Always successful in Germany, always delivering the goods — and tonight was no exception. The project of DJ BORG (Peter Mastbooms), also known from his work with The Klinik, the Juggernauts have carved out their own identity in the EBM scene with hard-hitting beats, aggressive synth lines, and those commanding vocals. The highlight of the night came with a rare leap from DJ Borg himself — a moment that had the crowd going wild. .Belgium represent.

Dina Summer

Competent, but perhaps a touch too polished — a little too clean for the rawer edges of an EBM night. Still enjoyable, just not the earthshaker one might have expected.

The Invincible Spirit

A true classic in the EBM and electronic underground world. Few acts carry the weight of history that The Invincible Spirit do, and they wore it well. A fitting closer to a strong opening night.

📅 Friday 22 May 2026 — Day One : The Festival Opens

Ash code 24

The official Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2026 programme kicked into gear on Friday, and with it came the full spread of venues across Leipzig — from the AGRA fairground to the intimate Felsenkeller and beyond.

Ductape

The Felsenkeller was packed to the walls for this Turkish duo. People had been waiting, and Ductape did not disappoint. A powerful, driving performance that proved the post-punk and darkwave crossover from Turkey has real momentum worldwide right now.

Dlina Volny

Mysterious and in the same time sensual front women ,darkwave , cold wave and little piece of synth pop from Belarus

Bragolin

A Dutch duo bringing their own shade of dark electronics to the stage. Interesting and well received by the crowd gathered for the afternoon programme.

Ash Code

The Italian duo — two brothers —and frontwomen Claudia delivered one of the more emotionally resonant sets of the day. Their brand of darkwave and cold synth-pop translates powerfully in a live context, and the Felsenkeller crowd was rewarded for showing up early.

Skeletal Family

A tight new wave and post-punk set with genuine energy. The frontwoman was a force of nature — commanding the stage with the kind of presence that makes you understand exactly why Skeletal Family are still a relevant name after four decades. Direct, rhythmic, alive.

📅 Saturday 23 May 2026 — The Big Day from Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2026

Suicide commando 57

Saturday at WGT is always the day when the AGRA fairground feels like the entire dark universe has converged in one place. The car situation caused us to miss a few acts — these things happen at WGT, you accept it and move on — but what we did catch was exceptional.

Rosa Crux

A Rosa Crux show is always a meticulously crafted ritual. This time was no different: every detail perfectly in place, the visual staging immaculate, and — notably — the set consisted of new material. That is a bold choice, but the audience embraced it fully. Rosa Crux know their craft.

Suicide Commando

The AGRA hall was absolutely packed — more so than we had ever seen before for Suicide Commando. And with reason: 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of Johan Van Roy’s Belgian electro-industrial project, one of the most enduring and influential acts the scene has ever produced. From eternal club weapons like See You in Hell and Die Motherfucker Die ,Dein Herz, Meine Gier to the more recent Goddestruktor material, Van Roy and his crew delivered a relentless, celebratory assault. The crowd gave back everything they got and more. An anniversary worthy of the name.

Front Line Assembly

The Vancouver legends brought serious firepower to the main stage. A commanding frontman, exceptional showmanship, and keyboards provided additional texture — and on drums, none other than Eli from Vegas, better known from Zweite Jugend. Front Line Assembly also celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2026, reawakening the spirit of their classic Wax Trax! era with tracks like Provision, Iceolate and more. A double anniversary night at WGT, and both bands delivered magnificently.

Covenant

The Swedish synthpop legends were also celebrating — 40 years of Covenant on the WGT stage. Three acts celebrating 40 years on the same night in Leipzig is the kind of serendipity that makes this festival unique. Covenant delivered the anthems, the atmosphere, and the emotion that their long career commands. The crowd sang every word.

Perturbator

A fascinating and unexpected pairing: electronic music meeting raw guitar in ways that challenge the category entirely. Perturbator’s blend of synthwave intensity and live instrumentation was genuinely surprising and had people rooted to the floor in a different kind of trance. A statement set.

📅 Sunday 24 May 2026 — Into the Depths

Sunday at WGT tends to be the day for deeper listening, and 2026 proved that tradition well.Empathy test 24

MS Gentur + Sven Phalanx

Tight beats with industrial noise layered over the top — a combination that demands concentration and rewards it. A focused, intense performance for those who appreciate the harsher edges of the WGT spectrum.

Ambassador21

They know exactly how to captivate their audience. Ambassador21’s show is built on spectacle as much as sound — a bruising, hypnotic experience that blends power electronics with performance art. The crowd was completely theirs.

Empathy Test

Once again, a full Felsenkeller for the group with the charismatic vocalist. Empathy Test have built something remarkable over recent years — an emotional, melodic darkwave sound that packs rooms everywhere they play, and WGT 2026 was no exception.

Diorama

The very successful German act was a highlight of the Sunday programme. Diorama carry a weight of quality songwriting that sets them apart, and the Leipzig crowd — arguably the most knowledgeable goth audience on earth — gave them the reception they deserved.

Ah Cama-Sotz

Worth the trip alone for the curious. The Belgian one-man techno-noise project of Herman Klapholz is a singular experience — confrontational, dense, and completely uncompromising. If you have never heard Ah Cama-Sotz live, WGT is the right place to start.

📅 Monday 25 May 2026 — The Final Day

Gothic identity lectures readings 14

The last day of WGT always carries a bittersweet weight. You have been absorbing music, culture, fashion and community for four days straight, and you are simultaneously exhausted and never wanting it to end.

Gothic Lectures — Ballsaal

A morning well spent: lectures given by Xavier Kruth and Jana Komaritsa in the Ballsaal as part of the Gothic Lectures programme. This side of WGT — the intellectual and cultural dimension — is something the festival does unlike any other event of its kind. A stimulating session.

Heidnisches Dorf (Pagan Village)

No WGT is complete without time at the Pagan Village — food, fire, medieval atmosphere, and a brief glimpse of the Keltania proceedings. We ate well and took our time absorbing the unique atmosphere that only WGT can provide.

Fliehende Stürme

German depressive punk — that is the descriptor, and it fits. The music itself carries a heavy, grey weight, but the crowd was enthusiastic and engaged, which told its own story about the enduring power of the genre.

The Crimson Ghosts

A solid, heavy set to carry the afternoon forward.

Batmobile

Superb. The Dutch psychobilly and rockabilly legends delivered a set of incredible energy, with a frontman and vocalist who was practically a force of nature — never still, never less than fully committed, drawing every last response from the audience. Outstanding.

Demented Are Go

Psychobilly at its absolute peak. Demented Are Go are the gold standard of the genre and made no effort to hide it. Relentless energy, unforgettable songs, and a crowd that knew every word of every track. The perfect closer to a remarkable final day.

The Other feat. Grand Horror

The German show to close out the evening. A fine note on which to end the musical programme.

Homeward Bound — Tuesday 26 May

The drive home came with the same automotive complications as the journey out — until a very kind gentleman from ADAC arrived to save the day. Tired but completely satisfied, we crossed the Belgian border with five days of extraordinary music still ringing in our ears.

Final Thoughts — WGT 2026

The 33rd Wave-Gotik-Treffen confirmed what we already knew: there is nothing else like this festival anywhere in the world. The combination of musical breadth — from EBM warmup nights to depressive punk finales, from Gothic Lectures to the Pagan Village, from 40th anniversary celebrations to debut-level surprises — is simply unmatched.

Three legends celebrating 40 years on the same weekend (Suicide Commando, Front Line Assembly, Covenant) gave Saturday an emotional weight that will be hard to forget. The Felsenkeller’s consistent sellouts (Ductape, Empathy Test) demonstrated that the festival continues to discover and elevate emerging voices alongside the legends. And the Heidnisches Dorf reminded us, as it always does, that WGT is about far more than concerts.

We will be back. And if you haven’t been yet — start planning.
